SU SHI
Calming Wind and Waves
Do not listen to the rain beating against the trees,
Why not walk slowly and chant with ease?
Better than saddled horse I like sandals and cane—
Oh, I would fain,
In a straw cloak, spend my life in mist and rain.
Drunken,I am sobered by the vernal wind shrill
And rather chill.
In front, I see the slanting sun atop the hill;
Turning my head,I see the dreary beaten track.
Let me go back !
Impervious to rain or shine,I'll have my own will.
The Immortal By The River
.
Drinking through the night at East Slope,
still drunk on waking-up,
I return home around midnight.
My house-boy snores like thunder,
no answer to my knock.
Leaning on my stick, listening to the river,
I wish this body belonged to someone else.
When can I escape this turmoil?
In the deep night, with the wind still, the sea calm;
I'll find a boat and drift away,
to spend my final years afloat,
trusting to the river and the sea.
On the birth of a son
我被聰明誤一生;
Families when a child is born
Hope it will turn out intelligent.
I, through intelligence
Having wrecked my whole life,
Only hope that the baby will prove
Ignorant and stupid.
Then he'll be happy all his days
And grow into a cabinet minister.
Riverside Daffodils
My whole world’s like an eventful stage
Getting strangely funny now I’ve aged.
A busy life with the mouth, for the mouths,
And a lousy outcome by my big silly mouth.
Oh well, the Yangtse embraces the town in a loop,
Where the river fish should taste just as good.
There are also bamboo groves over the hills,
Where I should find many sweet and earthy shoots.
An attendant role cannot do much harm anyway.
Banished poets are seen to do great on waterways.
And the work I do can hardly touch the pay I get.
The bag of wine grain my Lord gave is such a waste!

River Huai's waves seem to beat my pillow till dawn;
A ray of moonbeam peeps at me forlorn.
The heartless River Bian flows eastward down,
Laden with parting grief, you've left the town.
Once we got drunk by riverside bamboo and flower,
My tears made sweet wine sour.
How could a mirror not be stained with dust?
Who could predict the trouble brewing up in gust?
Mid-Autumn Moon
The sunset clouds are gathered far away, it's clear and cold,
The Milky Way is silent, I turn to the jade plate.
The goodness of this life and of this night will not last for long,
Next year where will I watch the bright moon?
Dreaming of My Deceased Wife on the Night of the 20th Day of the First Month

Ten boundless years now separate the living and the dead,
I have not often thought of her, but neither can I forget.
Her lonely grave is a thousand li distant, I can't say where my wife lies cold.
We could not recognise each other even if we met again,
My face is all but covered with dust, my temples glazed with frost.
In deepest night, a sudden dream returns me to my homeland,
She sits before a little window, and sorts her dress and make-up.
We look at each other without a word, a thousand lines of tears.
Must it be that every year I'll think of that heart-breaking place,
Where the moon shines brightly in the night, and bare pines guard the tomb
