ALEIXANDRE, VICENTE

ondas nuevas, antiguas, fugitivas, perpetuas,

mar o tierra, navío, lecho, pluma, cristal,

metal, música, labio, silencio, vegetal,

mundo, quietud, su forma. Se querían, sabedlo.

They loved one another

They suffered in the light, blue lips at dawn,

lips emerging from the harsh night,

cracked lips, blood—blood where?

They loved one another on a ship-like bed, half night, half light.

They loved one another as flowers love deep thorns,

that tender jewel of new yellow,

when faces turn wistfully,

moonflowers that shine as they receive that kiss.

They loved one another by night, when the dogs of the deep

throb beneath the earth and the valleys stretch out

like ancient backs beneath a passing hand:

a caress, silk, a hand, the moon that comes and touches.

In love, they loved one another at daybreak,

among the hard, closed stones of the night,

hard as bodies frozen by the passing hours,

hard as kisses of tooth against tooth alone.

They loved one another by day, the beach slowly swelling,

waves that, from their feet, caress their thighs,

bodies rising from the earth and floating…

They loved one another by day, upon the sea, beneath the sky.

Perfect midday, they loved one another so intimately,

the sea, so high and young, vast intimacy,

the solitude of the living, distant horizons

linked like bodies singing in solitude.

Loving. They loved one another like the luminous moon,

like that round sea that rests against that face,

a sweet eclipse of water, a darkened cheek,

where red fish come and go without music.

Day, night, sunsets, dawns, spaces,

new waves, ancient waves, fleeting waves, perpetual waves,

sea or land, ship, bed, feather, glass,

metal, music, lip, silence, plant,

world, stillness, their form. They loved one another—know it.
